The Battle of Marathon, close to the Petalioli Gulf where in 490 BCE the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians. It is 26.2 miles from Marathon to Athens, the legend says Pheidippides was sent running to announce the victory - Hence the modern Marathon distance of 26.2 today. He died in delivering the message. "Joy to you" - his last words.
